So just what is Uniqua? That seems to be the big question and no-one agrees on what the answer is. "A ladybug," says one mother. "Are you an idiot?" another fan inquires sweetly. "Can't you tell she's an ant?" "No, no," says another. "She's a pig!"
Whatever the answer, Nick Jr. isn't saying. When the discussion gets intense, though, the answer that usually shouts the rest down is that Uniqua is exactly what her name implies: unique. She's one of a kind, not meant to be any particular species.
That makes sense to me.
Facts about Uniqua:
Light pink, with dark pink spots and light pink antennae, Uniqua wears overalls that are the reverse of her coloring. One of the smallest of the Backyardigans, she is very confident and daring, full of ideas and energy. Backyardigans creator Janice Burgess says that Uniqua is the Backyardigan she wishes she was like as a child.
Uniqua is voiced by LeShawn Jeffries, sung by Jamia Simone Nash and danced by Hattie Mae Williams.
UPDATE: According to the Nick Jr. FAQ on Backyardigans, Uniqua is "unique, just like her name!"

She is an ant! An adorable one!!!
ReplyDeleteShe is a martian frog.
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of earth creature looks like that!?!
See, if you take the antennae off, then she looks like a frog. Unless you think diffrent. She cant be an insect because she only has 4 legs.
ReplyDeleteSoooooo the antennae must only mean one thing. MARS!
She is a chameleon! That's why she blends in with her clothing.
ReplyDeleteUniqua says it all. She is only what a little kid makes of her, there is no specific animal that she is mimicking. She is Unique in every aspect…
ReplyDeleteCan't you tell...she a hood rat.
ReplyDelete<3
Deletei still say she's martian, though.
ReplyDeletei agree i think that she is a martian but my husband thinks that the creater has a very uniqe imaginaiton
ReplyDelete¡Excellent!Uniqua is ``uniqua´´ pink
ReplyDeleteuniqua is an ANT!!!!
ReplyDeleteshe is a ladybug for sure
ReplyDeleteget it??
ReplyDelete'unique'
uniqua = UNIQUE.!

sssh! sssh! secret ... shhh!!! shh! secret a-a-a-aGENT!!!
you just gotta love it!
ooohhh.... my son loves this show....
ReplyDeletelemme ask him what he thinks uniqua is when I get home....
I have the backyardigans guide and it says her species name is the same as her name
ReplyDeleteMy nephew thinks it is a pink bug or a pig. He told me to find out, but i guess there isn't an answer ha ha.
ReplyDeleteChameleon
ReplyDeleteI was thinking a snail with no shell- and add arms and legs so she could keep up with the others?????????
ReplyDeleteIn my fan series, "Backyardigans Teen Years" (also known as "Backyardi-Teens"), many characters imply that Uniqua's species is called Uniqua too. That is, Uniqua's parents thought having Uniqua as their daughter's name would honor their species.
ReplyDeleteBoth my husband and my father in-law says that she is a spotted salamander
ReplyDeleteShe is a Salamander obviously.
ReplyDeletepersonally i think she is a ant but my girl says she is a chicken so i say chicken that works right
ReplyDeleteMy son luvs this show.I think she is a ant just because of her antenna. But then with the spot she looks like a ladybug. MAYBE SHES BOTH
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking COCK ROACH! Why not??
ReplyDeleteActually, Uniqua is not an animal or bug... I read that she was created to be "Unique", there is no other like her, hence the name "Uniqua". It is meant to symbolize how each person is unique... not exactly the same as anything or anyone else. Pretty cool, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know if you think back to the Muppets Era(Kermit, Miss piggy, etc.) they had the same Formula. Gonzo was just Gonzo and Uniqua is just Uniqua. Theres no animal species to associate them with. There just there own breed.
ReplyDeleteGonzo is a monster or an alien... I think there was a movie about that...
DeleteGonzo is an alien. The movie "Muppets from Space" had a whole bunch of weirdos come down to Earth and see if Gonzo wanted to go back. He decided to stay with Kermit and the gang.
DeleteOr the same for Goofy. What in the world is Goofy?
Deletemy niece said uniqua is a butterfly that doesn't have her wings yet
ReplyDeleteI have a theory about her...it came to me last week....I wrote up a blog about it....sheesh, I'm writing blogs about an animated pink creature.
ReplyDeleteevery time i see that show i cant stop trying to work out what that animal is! on the nick jr website it tells you what each 1 is. it said that uniqua is a uniqua. since there is no existing animal i would say it is a unique, made up animal as its name suggests. so i cant see nickjr being wrong about 1 of there own, so we can finely put our brains to rest. an that is probably what it is there for, for the little ones to use their imagination.
ReplyDeleteUniqua is whatever your child wants to be...some kids are a specific race or background while others a mixture, and i think uniqua represents just that!
ReplyDeleteuniqua is the number one. she is the most intelligent, brave and special of the backyardigans. come on uniqua!
ReplyDeleteUNIQUA IS A UNIQUE THAT IS WHAT HER SPECIES IS CALLED SO STOP SPECULATING AND GET WITH THE PROGRAM...
ReplyDeleteAccording to nickjr.com "Uniqua is her name and her species."
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nickjr.co.uk/shows/backyardigans/uniqua.aspx
She's a snail!
ReplyDeleteI think Uniqua is an ant, but my sister, brother and I continue to debate what exactly she is. :)
ReplyDelete(I'm 13 and I still love this show! :D )
My daughter says that Uniqua is a butterfly without wings! :-) I told her that she is supposed to be a Unique being...a literal being that represents the fact that we are all unique in our own way! I love the butterfly without wings idea, though....it's too sweet!
ReplyDeleteuntil i read the nickjr website i thought uniqua was a ladybug or a pig. anyway she is unique. she is also my favorite backyardigan
ReplyDelete( i am almost 13 and i looove the show)
Finally I figured out what she was!! She is quite Unique. But, I thought her name was Monique and that she came from the martian planet Mars!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Monique... :D
DeleteGOOD GRIEF PEOPLE
ReplyDeletecan't ya wake up? (no offense, just had to say that)
she is a LADYBUG!!!!
I think that she is an undiscovered dinosaur something we should all be able to agree
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the two gentlemen who speculate that she is a salamander. When I saw her I figured her for a cave salamander - very rare (or unique) and soft pink with feathery (rather than curly) "antennae". But very similar.
ReplyDeleteShe's like Wubbzy, he thinks he's a mixed square. For me, Uniqua think she's a mixed oval. So she dosen't have to be an animal, nor a Uniqua. FOR ME A FEMALE OVAL!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is, my almost 4 year old says to me Monday-Friday, when the show is on, "Mom! I know all the animals but not Uniqua! What is she?" When I tell her I'm not sure she says, "She has to be something! Look it up!" I look it up and still, my answer to my child is, "I'm not sure what kind of animal she is. No one knows really!" And then I get this from my FOUR year old, "Well, the person that made her should know what she is! Let's ask!" So, obviously I cant ask......but come on, I know more than just my child would like to know....WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL IS UNIQUA?
ReplyDeletePerson with 4-year old son, tell him that "the person that made her" says she's unique, or if he can't understand, tell unique means special, just like Uniqua!
ReplyDeleteBruh she is a pink iguana. That's what I think :)
ReplyDeleteI believe she is a lady bug due to the pink spots and the intennas.
ReplyDeleteCreator Janice Burgess describes Uniqua as 'the child she wishes she was like as child' According to Janice, Uniqua is just her. "Uniqua is her name, and also her species – with her purple skin, pink spots, and dainty antennae, she doesn't look like any other creature on the planet."
ReplyDeleteI THINK SHE IS A LADYBUG/BUTTERFLY BUT WHAT DO I KNOW I'M NOT THE CREATER.....TEEHEE! :D
ReplyDeleteidiots she is a big fat pink space monster
ReplyDeleteI am reading these and I think maybe a caterpiller!
ReplyDeleteI came across this discussion on accident. What's funny is I've never wondered what Uniqua was and neither has my four year old...
ReplyDeleteMy daughter thinks that she is a snail I agree that uniqua is meant to be whatever the child believes she is :)
ReplyDeleteShes a martian frog-a-mander says our 5 and 9 yr olds
ReplyDelete
